WSO President Visit to Support Quality Stroke Care in China

WSO President Jeyaraj Pandian participated in the Capacity Building Program for Stroke Healthcare Professionals in Shaanxi Province, held in Xi’an on December 7th. The program was organized by Prof. Han Jianfeng and Prof. Shen Li from Shinjitan University, Beijing, with faculty members Prof. Yu Liping, Prof. Chang Mingze, and Prof. Zhang Bo. More than 110 healthcare professionals from the province participated. During the panel discussion, Prof Pandian emphasized the importance of stroke center certification to improve and standardize the quality of stroke care in China. President-elect Prof Craig Anderson also shared insights on emerging approaches to the management of ICH (hemorraghic stroke)

While visiting the country, Prof Pandian also conducted a site visit for WSO Stroke Center Certification at the First Affiliated Hospital of Jiaotong University. Established just one year ago, this center offers excellent stroke services and is leading efforts to develop stroke care across the province. Next stop was the First Affiliated Hospital of Jilin University in Changchun, Jilin Province —a region with the highest stroke burden in China. The stroke center there manages a very high patient volume and plays a key role in advancing stroke care in the Northeast provinces. Dr. Jang Li, Vice President of the hospital, is a dynamic leader supported by an outstanding and highly motivated young faculty.

On December 9th, Prof Pandian conducted a site assessment at the First Affiliated Hospital of Fujian University in Fuzhou. Present during the visit were Dr. Dezhi Kang (President), Dr. Dajun Chai (Vice President), Dr. Shiyue Ye (Directorate of Medical Affairs), Dr. Bin Cai (Deputy Director of Neurology), and Dr. Dengliang Wang (Deputy Director of Neurosurgery). This hospital plays a major role in developing stroke programs in Fujian Province.

Overall, WSO plans to certify at least 50 stroke centers in the coming months, marking a significant step toward improving stroke care quality and standardization across China.
