World Stroke Summit

World Stroke Summits build on the foundation and structure of the Global Stroke Alliance (GSA) meetings, which were established in Latin America in 2020. World Stroke Summits are facilitated by WSO, and designed to create robust international alliances that deliver impact around the world. With a regional focus on reducing the burden of stroke, Summits provide a platform for the exchange of knowledge, evidence-based best practices and identification of opportunities to strengthen prevention, acute care, rehabilitation and systems of care.

Summits bring together stroke leaders from around the world, including researchers, health professionals, health managers, scientific societies, industry representatives, and patient associations. Through the exchange of diverse knowledge and expertise and the facilitation of strong, sustainable regional collaboration, Summits provide a platform for the development and implementation of strategic national and regional plans - supported by the WSO expert network- to improve stroke outcomes.

A key element of these events is the Ministerial Meeting where ministries of health and stroke experts work together to identfiy gaps in stroke care, discuss successful models, and propose actionable solutions. These deliberations feed into the on-going meeting to support the development of stroke action plans aimed at making substantial improvements in stroke care.

From 6-7th August in Johannesburg, South Africa, WSO and the Department of Health of South Africa will host the World Stroke Summit Africa. Bringing together health ministries, healthcare administrators, global and regional stroke experts, industry and civil society representatives from across the region, the event will support the development of national implementation plans to reduce the burden of stroke.

Objectives of the World Stroke Summit Africa Ministerial Meeting (Aug 6th)

elevate stroke as a pressing health and development priority across Africa, requiring coordinated national and regional action.
share practical policy approaches and country experiences that can strengthen prevention, improve access to care, and support effective implementation within African health systems.
encourage leadership and commitment to accelerate progress, strengthen accountability, and sustain action on stroke within national health agendas.

Beyond the Ministerial Meeting Summit delegates will participate in workshops focused on prevention, acute care and rehabilitation.

Objectives of World Stroke Summit workshops (Aug 7th)

equip participants with actionable tools to implement effective stroke prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation strategies.
advance integrated, team-based care across the full stroke pathway.
scale up proven interventions and adapt best practices to local realities.
strengthen clinical leadership and implementation capacity within health systems.
drive measurable improvements in stroke outcomes through quality improvement and data use.

A specific hands on teaching workshop for neuro-interventionalists, that aims to develop mechanical thrombectomy workforce capacity in the region will be held from 6-8th August.
