The World Stroke Organization (WSO) is the world’s leading global organization in the fight against stroke. Each year, 17 million people suffer from stroke worldwide; of these nearly 6 million die and another 5 million are permanently disabled. Stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability in lost disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Yet, at least half of all strokes are potentially preventable with appropriate awareness and prevention. Furthermore, given the strong links between stroke and dementia, preventing dementia is also a key objective.
