WSO and the Department of Health of South Africa will host the World Stroke Summit Africa in Sandton, Johannesburg from 6-7th Aug 2026. Built on the model of the Global Stroke Alliance meetings, established in Brazil in 2020, the World Stroke Summit will bring together health ministries, WHO leads, healthcare administrators, global and regional stroke experts, industry and civil society representatives to develop strategies to overcome barriers and leverage opportunities to improve regional stroke outcomes.
A key feature of the World Stroke Summit Africa will be the Ministerial Meeting on Aug 6th which will bring together health Ministers and Ministry representatives from across the region with the aim of:
- elevating stroke as a pressing health and development priority across Africa, requiring coordinated national and regional action;
- sharing practical policy approaches and country experiences that can strengthen prevention, improve access to care, and support effective implementation within African health systems;
- encouraging leadership and commitment to accelerate progress, strengthen accountability, and sustain action on stroke within national health agendas.
Beyond the Ministerial Meeting Summit, delegates will have the opportunity to participate in workshops focused on prevention, acute care and rehabilitation, sharing learning, evidence-based practice, and opportunties to advance implementation in the African context.
