The WSO Campaign Committee, SSO Committee, and WSO CARES Network are proud to launch a new awards campaign to raise awareness of the important role people with lived experience are playing across all aspects of stroke care, advocacy, research, and policy in diverse contexts around the world.
Over the coming months, we will be reaching out to networks and inviting nominations of individuals who are leveraging their lived experience — either as stroke survivors or caregivers — to create meaningful change in their communities and beyond.
The overarching purpose of the award is to elevate the profile of lived-experience leadership globally, showcase examples of progress and good practice in lived-experience participation, and inspire future advocates.
Every nominee will be featured on the World Stroke Campaign website Roll of Honour and will receive a certificate recognising their contribution to the stroke community. In addition, four standout voices from each of WSO’s five global regions will be selected by the 20 Voices Working Group to feature in the World Stroke Congress Life After Stroke Exhibition, online storytelling initiatives, and a high-profile social media campaign running throughout October.
One overall winner will be selected to receive the inaugural WSO Global Voice of Lived Experience Award, which will be announced on World Stroke Day, 29 October.
Whether self-nominating or being nominated by others, each submission will include a short statement, with the option to provide supporting documentation demonstrating impact. The closing date for nominations is 27 June 2026. Following this, submissions will be assessed against the following criteria:
-
Demonstrated impact on awareness, services, research, or policy
-
A strong and authentic advocacy voice
-
Leadership and initiative in driving change
-
Reach and influence at regional or global level
-
Alignment with the Global Stroke Bill of Rights
-
Commitment to ethics and integrity
If you know — or if you are — someone with lived experience who has made a significant impact in the world of stroke, we want to hear from you.
