The Fundación Dominicana de Accidente Cerebral (Fundace) is the registered stroke support organization in the Dominican Republic. Here its founder, Feliz Vinicio Lora, tells us about his stroke journey and the work of Fundace.
Raising awareness about stroke through community facilitators
My name is Feliz Vinicio Lora, a journalist, broadcaster, lawyer and producer of radio and television programs. In 2010 I suffered a stroke at the age of 47, when I was president of the Association of Art Chroniclers of the Dominican Republic, which organizes the popular Casandra Awards.
I was left with paralysis, global aphasia and cognitive problems. In 2012 we established the Fundación Dominicana de Accidente Cerebral (Fundace), with the mission of educating the population in the prevention of strokes and supporting stroke survivors and their families.
I give talks in communities, and in particular neighborhoods with high levels of poverty. I also visit schools, universities and clubs.
Our focus is to support stroke survivors through what we call “CLUB ACV”, educating about secondary stroke prevention and so they can educate others; about healthy eating and lifestyle and providing them with tools and skills so that they resume socioeconomic and family life.
The “CLUB ACV” is also made up of support volunteers, psychologist volunteers and collaborators.
The activities we carry out include training courses and workshops in manual skills, computer science, and management of other skills.
Likewise, we provide survivors with psychological guidance, help with rehabilitation, medications associated with their conditions, sanitary products, support devices and food.
In each community that we give talks, we form a “CLUB ACV” and we train leaders so that they become Facilitators-Multipliers in the prevention of stroke.
We are have direct impact in several provinces of the country, supporting many people with disabilities due to strokes and their families.
In short, the “CLUB ACV”, the survivors of stroke, is one of the main reasons for our existence, because as the CLUB motto says: “After stroke there is also life”.
Sensibilización sobre el ictus a través de facilitadores comunitarios
La Fundación Dominicana de Accidente Cerebral (Fundace) es la organización registrada de apoyo al ictus en la República Dominicana. Aquí su fundador, Feliz Vinicio Lora nos cuenta su recorrido ictus y el trabajo de Fundace.
Mi nombre es Feliz Vinicio Lora, periodista, locutor, abogado y productor de programas de radio y televisión. En 2010 sufrí un derrame cerebral a los 47 años, cuando era presidente de la Asociación de Cronistas de Arte de República Dominicana, que organiza los populares Premios Casandra.
Me quedé con parálisis, afasia global y problemas cognitivos. En 2012 establecimos la Fundación Dominicana de Accidentes Cerebrales (Fundace), con la misión de educar a la población en la prevención de accidentes cerebrovasculares y apoyar a los sobrevivientes de accidentes cerebrovasculares y sus familias.
Doy charlas en comunidades, y en particular barrios con altos niveles de pobreza. También visito escuelas, universidades, y clubes.
Nuestro enfoque es apoyar a los miembros sobrevivientes a través de lo que denominamos “CLUB ACV”, educándolo sobre prevención para que no le repita y para que puedan educar a otros; sobre alimentación saludable y estilo de vida y dotándolo de herramientas y capacidades para que pueden insertarse en la vida socioeconómica y familiar.
El “CLUB ACV” está integrado, además, por voluntarios de apoyo, voluntarios psicólogos, colaboradores.
Dentro de las actividades que realizamos, cursos y talleres de formación en habilidades manuales, informática, manejos de otras habilidades y capacidades.
Asimismo, a los sobrevivientes le proporcionamos orientación psicológica, ayuda con rehabilitación, medicamentos asociado a sus condiciones, pampers de adultos, dispositivos de apoyo y alimentos.
En cada comunidad que impartimos charlas, formamos un “CLUB ACV” y Formamos líderes para que se conviertan en Facilitadores-Multiplicadores en la prevención del ACV.
Estamos impactando directamente, en varias provincias del país, muchas personas discapacidades por accidentes cerebrovasculares, y familias.
En fin, el “CLUB ACV”, las personas sobrevivientes de accidentes cerebrales, es una de las razones principales de nuestra existencia, porque como dice el lema del CLUB: “Despues del ACV también hay vida”.
