The Latin America Stroke Summer School is an educational program designed for young physicians in training or early in their careers across Latin America, seeking in-depth knowledge of stroke. It also aims to support the development and qualification of stroke services and pathways in the region. The course is led by a team of internationally recognized physicians, stroke neurologists, and neurovascular interventionalists. For the past 10 years, the European Stroke Winter School, endorsed by the European Stroke Society (ESO), the European Society of Neuroradiology (ESNR), European Society for Minimally Invasive Neurological Therapy (ESMINT) and World Stroke Organization, has been held in Bern, Switzerland. Its approach is unique: interventionalists and neurologists from an established or organizing stroke center sign up together to participate in the course and are jointly trained to return to their hospital and start or improve their service. The course format has been a successful way to spark interest in providing comprehensive acute stroke treatment. In Latin America, we included one or two nurses and on the team. In close collaboration with the Inselspital Bern, Switzerland, additional courses have been organized outside Europe. It was successfully held in Asia in 2022 and 2025, and now, for the first time, in Latin America, in a collaboration between the University of Bern and the Brazilian Stroke Network. The program includes state-of-the-art lectures on stroke management, with advanced knowledge provided by highly specialized faculty from Latin America, Canada, the United States and Europe. Special attention will be given to practical hands-on activities in acute emergency stroke care, technical skills in thrombectomy, with practical sessions using models and simulators, and hands-on. In addition, the course will place special emphasis on addressing local challenges. This includes the creation of a stroke center implementation plan with tutors and a plan for organizing local networks that will follow up on the implementation for 6 months after the event. Real-time acute support will also be provided for 6 months to select patients for reperfusion treatment (telestroke without borders in Latin America).
Main Topics of the Latin America Stroke Summer School include: Acute stroke treatment (ischemic and hemorrhagic) for neurologists, neurointerventionalists and nurses with lectures, workshops, case-discussion and hands-on.
