In the past: World Stroke Congresses were convened every 4 years. Congress sites during the past 15 years were Kyoto, Japan (1989), Washington, D.C., USA (1992), Munich, Germany (1996), Melbourne, Australia (2000), Vancouver, Canada (2004) and Austria (2008). The Joint World Congress on Stroke, co-organized with the Mediterranean Stroke Society and the Southern African Stroke Foundation, was held in Cape Town, South Africa, in October 2006.
