First of all, I wish all our office bearers, members, and partners a blessed New Year. We have begun the year with several landmark activities.
Exploring Foundation Grants
We have engaged in discussions about the THRIVE project with Bayer Global Health, the Bayer Foundation, the Philips Foundation, the European Investment Bank, the German Development Agency (GIZ), and UST Global. These funders have expressed interest in supporting work in Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Sri Lanka.
In addition, the Somalian government has submitted a national stroke implementation and prevention program to WSO for funding consideration. Countries such as Tunisia, Algeria, Seychelles, and Mauritius have also approached us for support in developing stroke care systems.
WHO External Review Group
I participated in the WHO External Review Group for “Bridging the Gap in Hypertension Care — BP Devices,” contributing to the scoping review, technical document, and policy brief. This work will play an important role in the standardization, licensing, and global manufacturing of blood pressure devices.
WSO Stroke Center Certification
It is encouraging to see that 100 centers from 28 countries (excluding LATAM) have already registered on the new certification portal. Our plan for this year is to certify 100 centers in China and around 50 centers from the rest of the world. The NABH–WSO MOU is also being finalized, with an additional target of certifying 100 centers in India. We are strategically rolling out the certification program across Africa, Asia, and Central Asia.
Resolution on Stroke Accepted at the WHO Executive Board Meeting
On February 3rd, at the 158th Executive Board session of the World Health Organization in Geneva, global health leaders approved the resolution “Reducing the Burden of Stroke: Strengthening Prevention, Acute Care, Rehabilitation and Health System Readiness,” which will be presented at the World Health Assembly in May. The resolution was tabled by Egypt and supported by Tunisia, Somalia, Georgia, Palestine, Chile, and Paraguay. If adopted at the WHA, this will be a historic milestone in the global fight against stroke and will create a lasting impact worldwide.
