Ahead of the UN High Level Meeting on NCDs in September, WSO has convened the Global Stroke Action Coalition, a powerful multisectoral partnership that officially launched on March 9th.
The launch marked the publication of a comprehensive global stroke policy brief that sets out the current and predicted global burden of stroke, and highlights opportunities for intervention and investment in stroke prevention, treatment and recovery. The Coalition call to action policy makers is expressed in five overarching interventions to support governments deliver on their NCD and health commitments.
Key policy recommendations
1. Making stroke a priority part of national NCD strategies
2. Developing dedicated National Stroke Action Plans
3. Funding stroke action and investigating innovative new finance mechanisms
4. Implementing robust stroke monitoring systems
5. Including stroke survivors and care givers in policy development
The webinar was moderated by CNBC journalist and stroke survivor Sharon Epperson, hosted by WSO President Jeyaraj Pandian, and had input from Immediate Past President Sheila Martins, WHO, OECD and NCD Alliance policy experts. The discussion was firmly grounded by the deeply affecting experiences of Melinda Roaldsen, Joseph Rukelibuga -and Sharon herself – who shared the profound impact of stroke on their lives and on those around them.
The virtual launch event is being followed by an in-person event at the World Health Assembly in Geneva on May 19th. This event will mark the launch of the Coalition’s advocacy campaign that aims to secure specific mention of stroke as a driver of NCDs, WSO Executive Director will be in New York for the Civil Society Hearing, a key event that is likely to inform the outcome of the UN HLM and the forward agenda for NCDs to 2030 and beyond.
