The Stroke Association of Kenya successfully organized a charity walk and health clinic event in June 2025. The event was aimed at raising awareness and advocating for improved stroke prevention and care. Key stakeholders from the health sector, stroke survivors, caregivers, and members of the public came together in a united effort to address the growing burden of stroke in Kenya.
The Step Up for Stroke Walk 2025 aimed to:
• Raise awareness of stroke prevention and rehabilitation
• Advocate for improved stroke care policies and NCD interventions
• Support stroke survivors and caregivers
• Encourage corporate and community involvement in health initiatives
Following the walk a clinic and education session was conducted, including:
• Free health screenings
• Health talks on stroke prevention, warning signs, and treatment
• Peer engagement – stroke survivors shared testimonies and experiences
• Expert consultations from doctors and healthcare professionals
During his talk at the event, Dr. Evans Nyambega, Chairman of the Stroke Association of Kenya said:
‘’Today, as we gather at the heart of Nairobi, we are not just walking, we are stepping up. We are stepping up for stroke survivors. For families shattered by silence. For voices that faded mid-sentence. For limbs that froze mid-reach. For lives that changed in an instant. We walk with purpose. We walk with urgency. We walk because time is not on our side. Every hour in Kenya, someone suffers a stroke. Every hour, a life is altered, a parent silenced, a child confused, a breadwinner broken. Not because we lack medicine. Not because we lack hope. But because we lack systems. We lack speed. We lack support.’’
‘’Stroke is not a distant concern. It is not a disease of the elderly. It is striking younger Kenyans, breadwinners, mothers, fathers, students and leaving behind a trail of devastation. Yet even in that devastation, we see the courage of survivors. We see caregivers who refuse to give up. We see resilience. But resilience alone is not enough. We must match their fight with our commitment. That is why we walk. That is why we are calling on every citizen, every corporate leader, every policymaker: do not stand aside. Stroke recovery cannot remain a luxury. Timely care must not depend on your postal code or your pay slip’’.
