The importance of our global stroke community in calling for improvement in stroke treatment.
On May 27th WSO will launch ‘Driving the Revolution in Stroke Care’, at a panel event in Geneva. Developed with support from Philips, the policy paper will highlight the opportunity to accelerate progress on global health and development targets by investing in improved access to acute stroke care treatments.
We value the strength of our global stroke community in calling for improvement in stroke treatment and we recognise the importance of influencing at national level.
In preparation for the panel event, we asked our members to contact their Ministries of Health and encourage them to send a representative from their WHA mission in Geneva.
Stroke support organization leader and previous WSO Campaign Award winner, Dr Joseph Rukelibuga, reached out to the Rwanda Minister of Health, to encourage his ministry to send a delegate to the event.
Dr Rukelibuga is a committed stroke advocate and a founder of Stroke Action Rwanda, which took the lead on marking World Stroke Day for the first time in Rwanda in 2021. Since then Stroke Action Rwanda has built relationships with the Ministry of Health, Rwanda Biomedical Center, NCD Alliance Rwanda and the National Council of People Living with Disabilities to raise the profile of stroke.
Dr Rukelibuga says ‘I thought it was important to share the WSO's policy event with our Minister of Health because this is a unique opportunity to advocate for improving access to acute and subacute stroke care in Rwanda, which is a major health concern’.
As representatives of the stroke community in Rwanda and as an active member of the WSO, Dr Rukelibuga and Stroke Action have a crucial role in bringing this event to the attention of national leaders and raise the importance of prioritise improving availability and access to acute stroke treatment.
