Marla Gallo, born in 1988, is a Peruvian interventional stroke neurologist. She is currently working as the coordinator of the Stroke Center in Lima, Peru, and also has a position in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Training:
She graduated with honors in 2012 from the Faculty of Medicine at San Martin de Porres University. She completed her neurology residency at Guillermo Almenara Hospital, where she was the head of neurology residents. During her residency, she trained in vascular neurology at the Clinic Hospital in Barcelona. After completing her neurology training, she pursued a two-year fellowship in interventional neurology at the Neurology and Neurosurgery Institute in Mexico City, affiliated with the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
Awards:
She graduated with honors in both her medical degree and specialty training. In 2023, she received the Spirit of Excellence Award from Angels. In 2022, she led the certification process for her stroke center.
Research:
She holds a master’s in clinical research and contributed as an author to the first local guidelines on the acute management of ischemic stroke for the Social Security (EsSalud) and the Ministry of Health in Peru. Her primary research interest is epidemiological studies related to stroke in Peru. She is currently responsible for managing the RES-Q stroke patient database at her center.
Professional:
She is an active member of the Stroke Group and served as the secretary from 2018 to 2023. During this period, she coordinated the implementation of stroke awareness initiatives in Peru and led multiple campaigns in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of Peru. She is dedicated to raising awareness about stroke center formation and providing training for emergency room staff, intensivists, neurologists, and nurses across Peru.
Publications:
She has published articles in both local and international journals on topics such as thrombolysis in Peru and the increase in cerebrovascular disease during the COVID-19 pandemic. These publications highlight the importance of comprehensive stroke management. She has also reported clinical cases of arteriovenous malformations and rare stroke cases.
Personal Life:
Marla enjoys traveling around Peru and the world. She is passionate about sports, including running and functional training, and loves reading. She met her partner during her interventional neurology fellowship, and they have a one-year-old baby who shares a love for cars with his father. She cherishes spending time with her family.
