World Stroke Campaign November 2010 News
About World Stroke Day 2010: Tell Six
This year’s World Stroke Day (WSD) was a major success, setting the record for the largest number of events being commemorated across the world in honor of stroke survivors, their family, care givers, and the medical community. Members from Australia to Chile, Greece to Mongolia, and South Africa to Croatia all planned events for WSD. On WSD the “One in Six” campaign was launched, highlighting the fact that one in six people worldwide will have a stroke in their lifetime.
World Stroke Day was commemorated all over India with events such as stroke camps, press conferences, public lectures, and pamphlet distribution. The Stroke Foundation of Bengali planned to distribute close to 8,000 “One in Six” pamphlets in Bengali alone.
Emmie Malewezi, a stroke specialist nurse born in Malawi but currently working in London, has launched a stroke awareness effort that is new to Malawi. Due to the lack of information on stroke available in Malawi, she decided to join in on the World Stroke Campaign, publishing information about the “One in Six” campaign in newspapers and other media across Malawi on World Stroke Day.
In the United States, the American Stroke Association urged the public to take and complete the My Life Check online health assessment at 1:06 pm on October 29 and share it with six people in their lives. The assessment checked health factors that could lead to stroke and showed people how to change behaviors that could increase their chances of having a stroke.
The Brazilian Academy of Neurology, Brazilian Stroke Society and Brazilian Stroke Network organized a National Week against Stroke which included a National Walk against Stroke and an educational program on the radio about stroke prevention. Efforts by the Neurovascular Program UNICAMP included Rock Stroke ("Detonando AVC"), a concert featuring four rock bands which aimed to raise awareness about stroke among the general public. Monies raised during this concert will be used towards future actions in the fight against stroke in Campinas, Brazil.
On WSD in Madrid, the World Stroke Organization (WSO) was awarded the "Premio Ictus 2010" prize for Best Institution by the Spanish Neurological Society and Spanish Stroke Group. The Spanish actor Alfredo Landa, a stroke survivor, was awarded the "Premio Ictus 2010" for his personal contributions in the fight against stroke.

The committee is looking for a design that will represent the needs of the community, as it will be the face of the WSO, connecting members of the stroke community from all over the world.
